Once you decide on a location to sing, you will need to select a song. Most karaoke bars have a person called the KJ, (Karaoke Jocky) or the MC (Master of Ceremonies) who is in charge of running your karaoke experience. This person will ususally provide a songbook and a method for submitting songs. A popular method is to distribute slips of paper that ask for your name, the song name and the song number. You will select a song from the songbook, write down the name and number and submit it to the KJ who will manage the order in which people are chosen to sing.
Once you submit a song, sit tight and wait for your name to be called. Once it is your turn approach the Microphone and wait for the music to start. The song will begin to play and you will see lyrics on the television or monitor. Usually there is a change in color or some other indicator to let you know when to begin each lyric. On some songs where it is a duet you will have two different colors (one for the first singer and one for the second singer) that will indicate when each lyric is sung and by which singer.
Singing is easy. Just remember that the microphone is sensitive to your voice. Sing in a way that makes you comfortable and do not try to oversing your voice. A good KJ can compensate for minor shortcomings in your voice. On the same note, try an easy song the first time you sing, save the more difficult songs for after you are more comfortable.
Remember, always have fun!
